The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is one of the main campuses of the University of Rochester and comprises the university’s primary medical education, research, and patient care facilities.
Acentech consulted on acoustics and mechanical system noise and vibration control for the new eight-story, 245,000 SF children’s hospital.
A crucial first step was to determine whether the location of the hospital, under an aircraft flight path, was going to end up with a noise problem. Aircraft overflights were addressed by looking at the noise contours from the nearby airport and considering how many flights occurred and whether they were departing or arriving along this path.
Our scope of services included consulting rooms, conference rooms, a staff lounge, on-call rooms, MRI rooms, offices, operating rooms, and patient rooms. Acentech also consulted on the unique low-noise requirements of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
Acentech recommended special acoustical treatments for the interstitial mechanical floor with occupied spaces above and below, as well as various exterior wall constructions around the building that included curtain walls.
Acentech further helped the client in determining which acoustical measures the new building required and which were recommended by the recently completed 2010 FGI Guidelines.
