MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) in Portland, recognized as one of the best regional hospitals in New England, has grown since its inception in 1868 into the state’s largest medical provider, offering world-class care and research. In 2017, MHMMC hired Perkins&Will of Boston to design two new oncology floors atop the Coulombe Family Tower, and a new 8-story wing, the Malone Family Tower, which houses 40 pre- and post-surgical beds, 19 procedure rooms and 96 universal patient rooms that meet the area’s growing demand for inpatient care.
The new inpatient floors atop the Coulombe Family Tower—the Susan Donnell Konkel and Susan Gibson Pavilions—feature 64 single-patient rooms dedicated to surgical and medical oncology. There is also a helipad on the new roof.
Acentech provided acoustical recommendations within FGI Healthcare Facilities Guidelines for door, wall, window and floor-ceiling constructions to ensure appropriate sound isolation between spaces; recommendations for interior finishes that reduce sound build-up; and MEP noise and vibration control to ensure quiet air handling systems. We also prepared LEED documentation for v4.1 acoustics credit for both building projects.
We evaluated the vibrations in sensitive areas due to nearby walking activity. And, we assessed the potential impact of vibrations due to helicopter operations on upper floors.
The Malone tower’s design prioritizes occupant health with low-carbon strategies, sustainable elements, and natural wood paneling in public areas that looks beautiful and improves the acoustics. The new Malone Family Tower and Konkel & Gibson Pavilions are now open after 10 years in the making, serving Portland-area patients with the highest quality oncology and cardiovascular care.
