Acentech, a nationally recognized multi-disciplinary acoustics, audiovisual, IT, and security system design, and vibration consulting firm, is proud to announce that Principal Consultant Doug Sturz, INCE Board Certified, has received the Laymon N. Miller Award for Excellence in Acoustical Consulting from the Institute of Noise Control Engineering-USA (INCE-USA). This award is in recognition of four decades of outstanding consulting services in acoustics and noise control improving the quality of life in buildings and communities throughout the United States. Doug was honored with this prestigious award at a socially distant ceremony on September 15, 2020.
INCE-USA is a professional organization that promotes engineering solutions to buildings, environmental, product, machinery, industrial, and other noise problems. The Laymon N. Miller Award is an annual award provided jointly by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE-USA) and the National Council of Acoustical Consultants (NCAC) on alternating years. This award honors an individual who has practiced acoustical consulting in an exemplary manner over a sustained period of time to improve acoustical environments in and around buildings, transportation systems, workplaces, recreational and other occupied spaces, such that the quality of life for citizens and communities is significantly enhanced. The award’s namesake, Laymon N. Miller, was a distinguished consultant and leading expert in noise control engineering at pioneering firm Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN). Doug has joined an impressive group of acoustical consultants from the United States, including Anthony Hoover, Noral Steward, George Wilson, Jim Barnes, and Bill Cavanaugh.
At Acentech, Doug concentrates on mechanical system noise control, vibration isolation, sound isolation, and room acoustics. He has provided consulting services on a large range of project types including multi-family residential construction, performing arts facilities, civic and convention centers, office buildings, studios, worship spaces, and rapid transit facilities. However, Doug specializes in the design of science and laboratory facilities, the majority of which include noise and vibration-sensitive equipment. He has managed and technically supervised hundreds of these types of projects.
Throughout his over 40 year career, Doug has taught Architectural Acoustics at the Boston Architectural Center. He has also lectured on acoustics, noise control, and vibration control to professional organizations. He authored or co-authored chapters in several books, including the Handbook of Acoustical Measurements and Noise Control – Third Edition, edited by Cyril Harris; Architectural Acoustics Handbook, edited by Ning Xiang; and Noise and Vibration Control Engineering, edited by István Vér and Leo Beranek. In addition, he has authored and co-authored several technical articles for professional trade magazines. Doug Sturz received a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University.
