AISC Fact Book on Sound Isolation in Steel Buildings

Ungar wrote the most recent installment of the American Institute of Steel Construction’s (AISC) guidance on sound isolation and noise control for steel buildings. A new resource, “Facts for Steel Buildings #4: Sound Isolation and Noise Control,” available as a free download from AISC, is aimed at providing building owners and designers with a basic understanding of sound isolation and noise control for buildings, as well as useful tools to address these issues for steel structures. Written by Benjamin Markham and Eric Ungar, P.E., Sc.D., both with Acentech, Cambridge, Mass., this 25-page guide discusses relevant acoustical considerations to take into account beginning early in the design process and how to pursue their proper implementation.

AISC’s “Facts for Steel Buildings” series provides a look at the background and philosophy on various topics without delving into heavy technical details. More detailed information and specific guidance on designing for sound isolation and noise control can be found in AISC’s Design Guide 30: Sound Isolation and Noise Control in Steel Buildings.
